Interview: Nightwish on headlining Wembley, pyro and summer BBQs
Symphonic metal gods, Nightwish, are following in the footsteps of some of rock’s biggest bands by announcing a headline date at the SSE Arena, Wembley.
Making them the first Finnish band to do so – amazing. We caught up with keyboardist Tuomas to find out how they’re all feeling about the huge show…
So you’re playing Wembley in December, that’s huge! How’re you feeling about it?
“When our manager told us for the first time about a month ago, I had a huge incredulous smile on my face. It took a while for us to absorb what was going to happen. Even the word ‘Wembley’ has a mystical aura around it and once we reach the 19 December it´ll be one of those wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime moments.”
What does it mean to play Wembley for you and the band?
“It’ll definitely be one of the highlights of the upcoming tour. It’ll also be the first time we’ll be able to bring the full stage production to UK!”
Your new album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, has just been released, how’s the reaction been so far?
“I deliberately avoid reading reviews, internet forums and such, but what I’ve heard from people has been really positive overall. The album is a lot to take in with just one listen, though, so it’ll take some time to get into it.”
It’s lucky fans have plenty of time to learn the new songs before Wembley then, but which new tracks will you play live?
“We haven’t really decided yet; the setlist always gets it shape after a dozen or so shows. We’ll definitely rehearse all the new tracks for a live performance, except maybe for The Eyes Of Sharbat Gula.
Before all that, how will you be spending the summer before Wembley?
“Loads of festivals all over Europe, tons of BBQs, water sports, gardening, hiking, kayaking and campfire gazing…”
What do you think will be your soundtrack to all of that?
“Probably Christy Moore, Ride On!”
For those fans who haven’t picked up their Wembley tickets just yet, what could they be missing out on?
“This will be the first time we have full production on UK soil. It’ll be a fantastic, unique event which will send you (and us) to your Yuletide holidays with a huge smile on your face!”
