Interview: Carly Rae Jepsen talks UK fans, E-MO-TION and secret handshakes
Carly Rae Jepsen is joining Spandau Ballet, McBusted and WetWetWet in Portsmouth this weekend, as she performs as part of the America’s Cup World Series.
We caught up with the pint-sized Canadian pop songstress ahead of the event to talk about her new album, E-MO-TION, performing live and, well, secret handshakes. Scroll down for the full interview.
What’ve you been up to since you last played the UK?
“I’ve mostly been working on my new album E-MO-TION. I also did a little run as Cinderella on Broadway!”
And what do you love most about playing the UK?
“I love how cool the fans are; everyone is just ready to party and that energy is contagious!”
Your new album E-MO-TION is released this September, which tracks are you most excited to start playing live?
“Run Away With Me and Warm Blood are two that I love best at the moment, but honestly, the band boys and I are just pumped to play the whole album!”
Will you be performing any of the new songs in Portsmouth later this month?
“Yes, definitely!”
How much do you consider your live performance when recording a new album?
“I think about it a lot. You want to provide songs that bring energy but also tracks that break it up and evoke something real in every person there.”
Do you have any backstage rituals that you do before each show?
“The guys and I have a secret handshake that we do before every show, it’s just a nice little connection before the rush.”
For any new fans, what can they expect from your live show?
“Lots of surprises; it’s been my pleasure to dream up a really different live show than I’ve ever done before. You’ll just have to come and see!”
