Our weekly round up of this week's biggest new tours, shows and events.
Latitude Festival began life back in 2006, welcoming headliners Snow Patrol, Anthony and the Johnsons, and Mogwai. Since then it’s grown in size and stature, all the while celebrating a diverse line-up that offers far more than just music. A centre for the arts, the festival boasts an exciting comedy and theatre bill, as well as some of the biggest and most innovative names in music.
So who is playing this year?
As ever, there’s a huge range of music for Latitude Festival goers this year. The 1975 top the bill on the Friday, joined by the likes of Goldfrapp, and The Horrors on the The Obelisk Arena, located at the top of the hill that overlooks the whole site. Saturday sees Mumford & Sons team up with very special guests Baaba Maal, as well as influencing the day’s line-up with their Gentlemen of the Road takeover. Sunday will see a very welcome return by Fleet Foxes.
Former headliners Two Door Cinema Club will make a special guest appearance on the Saturday, alongside huge names such as Leon Bridges, Glass Animals and Milky Chance. The Sunday continues to showcase a diverse musical line-up, hosting John Cale, The Devine Comedy and much more.
Moving away from the main stage, the BBC Music Stage is topped by rock veterans Placebo, singer-songwriter sensation Jack Garratt and superstar DJ Fatboy Slim. The Sunrise Arena welcomes the best emerging talent in a stunning woodland setting, including BEAK>, Dave and Temples. The Lake Stage, presented by new music pioneer Huw Stephens sees Cabbage, Jorja Smith, and The Magic Gang take top billing. Youngr, Dan Owen and Childhood top The Alcove Stage, presented by DIY Magazine.
It’s about more than just music
It sure is. The Music & Film Arena plays host to stimulating documentaries, discussions and first-see film screenings. The comedy line-up also boats some of the biggest names, including Dara Ó Briain, Katherine Ryan, Simon Amstell, Reg D Hunter and so many more.
The theatre line-up is built around the festival’s theme, “Come The Revolution”. Established as one of the most innovative performing arts festivals in Europe, the line-up welcomes a range of thought-provoking, mesmerising and poignant visual arts.
The festival will host the likes of Black Honey Company’s Hot Brown Honey, a fusion of dance, poetry, comedy, circus strip-tease and song which celebrates our differences as well as our similarities in a stereotype-smashing show.
The Negro Problem’s Notes on a Native Song which uses the enduring legacy of James Baldwin to produce a crackling commentary on Trump’s America.
The Old Vic London in association with Fane Productions will bring Charlie Fink, famed for his work with Noah & The Whale, to Latitude with modern day folk tale Cover My Tracks.
London’s Royal Court Theatre will bring Manwatching to Latitude, a funny, frank and occasionally explicit insight into heterosexual female desire.
That’s just for starters.
It’s all very pretty
The only thing that can make a festival with this kind of line-up any better is its atmosphere. And what better way to foster a great atmosphere than with a stunning location.
Latitude Festival is based in Henham Park, Suffolk, a sprawling world of green grass, trees and calm waters. We could write more words about it, or you could check out the photos below as proof:
