Cardiff venue guide: the best local music and comedy clubs
There’s a reason Cardiff is a hub for students and its music scene is everything to do with it. Factor in a thriving comedy circuit and we’re spoilt for good night’s out.
Here, we round up the key music and comedy clubs to check out if you’re moving to or just visiting Cardiff.
Clwb Ifor Bach
Where: 11 Womanby St, Cardiff, bCF10 1BR
Why: A heavy focus on rock and alternative, with a sprinkling of dance and regular DJs.
Who: Joanna Gruesome, God Damn, Against The Current, Counterparts, Straight Lines, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes, Nothing But Thieves and loooads more.
Motorpoint Arena Cardiff
Where: Mary Ann Street, Cardiff, CF10 2EQ
Why: The city’s main arena welcomes most of the major rock and pop tours, as well as comedy, sports and exhibitions.
Who: Fall Out Boy, Bob Dylan and His Band, WWE Live, Imagine Dragons, Diversity, Mumford & Sons, Alt-J, The Vaccines, Duran Duran, Stereophonics, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, The Corrs, Jason Derulo, The Libertines, Black Stone Cheery and that’s only a taster. Seriously.
The Globe
Where: 125 Albany Rd, Cardiff, CF24 3NS
Why: The former cinema now hosts rock tours, comedians and DJs, as well as regular cover bands.
Who: Prides, Heck, The Ordinary Boys, Raging Speedhorn, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! and The Front Bottoms are just around the corner.
Where: Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, CF10 5BZ
Why: Another Glee Club success; the Cardiff venue is a go-to for comedy fans in the city.
Who: Jimeoin, Beardyman, David O’Doherty and Tommy Tiernan are a small slice of the great listings.
Cardiff University Student Union
Where: Place Park, City Centre, Cardiff, CF10 3QN
Why: Many of the touring rock, pop, electro, and alternative tours will stop at the uni’s main music venue.
Who: Years & Years, The Wombats, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Jess Glynne, Everything Everything, Marina & the Diamonds, Kodaline and, well, tons more.
