Although the band formed in Los Angeles in 1995, it wasn’t until 2003 with the release of their third album, Elephunk, that they began to climb worldwide charts. It was also the first album to feature the vocals of Fergie. Originally, Nicole Scherzinger was tipped to take lead vocals, however, she was forced to turn down the part as she was a member of another band and still under contract.

Elephunk contained the group’s first major song, Where Is The Love?, which peaked at No. 8 in the US Billboard charts. It peaked at a higher position in other countries, including No.1 in the UK. Where Is The Love? spent seven weeks at the top of the UK charts, and became the biggest-selling single of 2003.

The album also featured the songs, Shut Up which peaked at No.2 in the UK charts and went Gold and Platinum, Hey Mama which reached Top 5 in Australia and within the top ten across a number of charts throughout Europe, including the UK and Let’s Get It Started, which won The Black Eyed Peas their first Grammy in 2005 for the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

The first single from their fourth album, Monkey BusinessDon’t Phunk With My Heart, claimed the No.3 spot of the US charts and won the band their second Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The album got to No.2 on the US Billboard 200 Album Chart.

Other successful singles from Monkey Business includes Don’t Lie, My Humps and Pump It.

In 2009, the band released their fifth studio album The E.N.D (The Energy Never Dies) which debuted at the top spot of the Billboard 200 chart. The first single of the fifth album, Boom Boom Pow, became the band’s first No.1 single in the US, and topped many other charts including the UK, Australia and Canada. The single was No.1 in the US for 12 consecutive weeks.

Their second single released from The E.N.D was I Gotta Feeling which first debuted at No.2 on the US Billboard chart, behind their first single, Boom Boom Power, before claiming the No.1 spot. The band join a select group of artists who have held the top two spots of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. I Gotta Feeling remained at the top of the charts for 26 consecutive weeks, making it the longest run at No.1 by any artist.

In January this year, The Black Eyed Peas released their first single without Fergie called Street Livin’ and after many rumours, in February 2018, will.i.am confirmed that she had left the band.
