Album of the Week: Picture This

In-depth on Picture This' second album, MDRN LV

Launching MDRN LV from New York City’s Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day, Picture This return with their hugely anticipated sophomore effort.

A stark departure from their triple platinum self-titled debut, the Irish superstars delve into new sounds and broaden their genres while telling 12 familiar tales of modern relationships.

Produced by Jayson DeZuzio (Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors), the new album journeys through feelings of love and lust, as well as topics including breakups, infidelities and of course, parties.

The former duo – now a foursome thanks to new members Owen Cardiff and Cliff Deane – released lead single One Drink, a promising modern pop song which could saunter onto dancefloors sandwiched between tracks by Ed Sheeran and The Script, in October 2018.

Airing on the funky side, the record’s opener Modern Love seamlessly blends ’80s pop with streamlined production, while Someone to Hold – a collaboration with Australian singer CXLOE – walks the line between catchy country-folk-pop and your favourite heart-wrenching ballad. Dance Away with You also branches into radio-friendly pop ballad territory, with a catchy hook that quickly turns into an earworm you’re not in a hurry to lose.

Picture This - Everything Or Nothing

Everything or Nothing follows the jarringly brutal account of a break up while Hurt Nobody weaves a web of jealousy, confliction and distrust after a decision to stay with a cheating partner rather than be alone.

Life of the Party is bass and synth-heavy, with fuzzy autotuned choruses and joins stadium-filling pop-rock tune, More Than Just Tonight in the crowd-pleasing soon-to-be fan favourite category.

Picture This are continuing their giant strides into new territory with high-end clever pop, and enough funky grooves, unforgettable riffs and relatable lyrics to keep them moving forward.

It’s easy to see how Ryan Hennessy and Jimmy Rainsford’s duo have grown – not just doubling in size – but in expanding their sound into something new in the two years since their debut.
