Years & Years named BBC’s Sound of Music 2015

Say hello to the winners of the BBC’s Sound of Music 2015 poll… London’s Years & Years have been honing their electro pop sound since 2010, having made good use of the festival circuit last year.

Bagging the top spot – voted for by 139 industry experts – aims to uncover the act heading for big success in the coming year. Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and Adele are among previous winners of the prestigious title.

Talking about the exciting news, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander said: “It’s a mixture of emotions – mainly so grateful and happy that we’ve got this recognition, but also quite terrified of crashing and burning!”

“We’ve all been doing our own thing for long enough now, so we’re not going to let this disrupt us,” he added. “We’ve taken a lot of time to discover stuff and make mistakes and learn about the music we want to make. We’ve always done everything ourselves – the music, the videos – so it feels like we know who we are now. That’s done us alright so far, so our plan is to keep the blinkers on and keep doing that.”

Years & Years – made up of Olly, Michael and Emre – saw off competition from BRITs Critics’ Choice winner James Bay, grime artist Stormzy, singer-songwriter Raury and spoken word act George The Poet.

The three-piece will be hitting the road next month:

26 Feb – Birmingham Institute

28 Feb – Nottingham Rescue Rooms

2 Mar – Bristol Thekla

3 Mar – Glasgow King Tuts Wah Wah Hut

5 Mar – London Heaven
