The incredible rise of Sam Smith

You can’t move far without hearing someone swoon over Sam Smith right now.

It’s no wonder, really, as the Brit star picked up four Grammys this week. No stranger to awards success, Sam won the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Awards and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll.

He also triumphed at the 2013 and 2014 MOBO Awards, 2014 Q Awards, 2014 American Music Awards and 2014 Young Hollywood Awards. Phew.

The London-born star rose to fame after guesting on Disclosure’s breakthrough single Latch in 2012, and Naught Boy’s La La La in 2013. Since then, he’s had a No.1 album with his debut release, In The Lonely Hour, and countless chart-topping singles.

Sam Smith also became the only artist to sell one million albums in the UK and US in 2014, and even managed to squeeze in time to appear on the Band Aid 30 track.

“Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try to get my music heard,” the 22-year-old said at the 2015 Grammy Awards. “I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was when I started to be myself that the music flowed.”

It’s this kind of honesty that’s helped the music world become totally smitten with Sam Smith.

And this kind of frankness: “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”

Now, Sam mixes with the stars at these kind of swanky bashes, as he performed alongside Mary J Blige and schmoozed with Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.

The singer even hinted at a possible collaboration with Rihanna at the ceremony, telling reporters: “I’m personally very excited for Rihanna’s album. I know some stuff about that record that no-one knows.”

Please, please, make this happen!

There are some things only true fans know about Sam Smith, though. Like the fact he’s a HUGE Beyoncé fan and suffered from serious stage fright when he was starting out.

His favourite TV show is Modern Family, Lily Allen is his third cousin and he worked in a bar before finding fame.

Having focused his first album around the pains of unrequited love, Sam says he’s planning to be even more honest on his second outing.

“This will be the most honest thing I’ve ever written in my entire life,” he revealed recently. “It’s about my mum and dad splitting up, and it’s going to be even more honest and even more brutal.”

You may want to buy boxes of tissues in bulk before he releases any new material.

Sam Smith is touring the UK this March, and is also set to appear at Wild Life 2015.
